Rainforest Movement, Global Forest Coalition, Global Justice Ecology
Project and the STOP GE Trees Campaign
UN General Headquarters, New York City--The United Nations Forum on
Forests, meeting this and next week in New York, is promoting the
conversion of native forests into industrial monoculture tree
plantations. "Over the course of the next century, the greatest
threat to native forests is the rampant replacement by monoculture
tree plantations which include plantations of genetically engineered
trees," stated Simone Lovera, of Friends of the Earth International.
" This trend is happening all over the world, threatening forest
dwelling and indigenous communities and devastating biodiversity,"
she continued.

Paul Wolfowitz: Symbol of A Global Crisis Behind and Beyond Iraq
Global Justice Ecology Project offers the following paper to examine
the root issues that drive the Iraq war, ecological destruction and
social injustice around the world and that will inevitably lead to
future violent conflicts.
By Anne Petermann and Orin Langelle
Paul Wolfowitz, American Empire and the World Bank
The approval of Paul Wolfowitz, architect of the Iraq War, to head
the World Bank advances the Bank's role as an extension of U.S.
imperial power. Joseph Stiglitz, former chief economist of the World
Bank calls Bush's choice of Wolfowitz, "an act of provocation," that
could, "bring street protests and violence across the developing
world." Jim Vallette of the Institute for Policy Studies agrees
stating, "choosing Wolfowitz for this job makes perfect sense if the
Bush administration intends to completely alienate the world
community.

HINESBURG COMMUNITY MONTHLY SOCIAL POTLUCKS:
Besides the national and global issues we are involved with, we also
are involved in the community where we live. Since January of this
year we have been helping organize monthly potlucks. We are reaching
out to community members who are concerned about the state of the
world, the nation and our community.
June's movie is "The Corporation." At last month's May potluck we
watched the movie, "Save Our Land Save Our Town," and during the
April potluck we planted a tree at the Carpenter-Carse Library in
honor of conservationist John Muir and Earth Day. Next month there
are plans for a bar-b-que on the beach of Lake Iroquois.
Global Justice Ecology Board of Directors Update:
We sadly lost a board member, comrade and dear friend, Will Miller
(29 August 1940 - 31 March 2005).
Willard M. "Will" Miller, Professor of Philosophy at the University
of Vermont in Burlington and a revolutionary who dedicated his life
to the struggle for social justice, passed away on Thursday, March 31
at 11:01am due to complications from cancer. Will tirelessly fought
for academic and political freedom, rights of the poor, working class
and all inhabitants of the earth who suffer under economic inequities
and prejudices.

The Global Justice Ecology Project Board met at the end of April in
Vermont. One of the decisions was to add to our board
singer-songwriter, David Rovics. Welcome, David!
Additionally two members of the board, Njoki Njehu and Soren Ambrose,
moved this month to Kenya.
Best wishes and solidarity,
Orin
